Basic Web Design I
Course Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following:- Basic understanding of the world-wide web and what the main components are that make up the internet
- Understand the basics of establishing a website on the web and the background behind HTML and how the web page files are structured
- Appreciate the principles of a table based layout and how table tags are used in the design as well as adding of content
- Knowledge of the use of graphics and fonts for web design and the importance of page structure and layout
- Understand the key components of designing a web page, layout considerations and site planning
- Be able to open Expression Web2 and navigate the basic menu navigation and be able to create a page, save and publish to the web via the Remote Web Site feature
- Concepts of how the pages are published on the web and the key file names involved and basic directory structures
In this course we cover 2 modules of theory and 2 hands-on training. We get to build a template, insert graphics and navigation menu buttons, add hyperlinks to the buttons and insert an editable region for the content area. We then generate all of our pages required to build the site, and add the content to each page, upload and test on the internet.
Prerequisites
There are no hard and fast pre-requisites for this course, however a basic understanding of computers and in general Microsoft applications and use and navigation of menus and toolbars is recommended.Investment

Basic Web Design II
Course Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following:
- Appreciate the difference between a table based layout and one using cascading style sheets
- Understand the basic concepts of Cascading Style Sheets and the main styles required for setting up the structure of the web-site and general styling of navigation menus
- Learn the basics of the box model theory and how positioning works especially with respect to images and text placement in pages
- Build a CSS based template for the revised Whitechapel Cottage web-site, and add navigation menus in preparation for creating the pages
- Learn the key styles for placement of content, headings, paragraphs and links
- Build the final DIV’s required to add the content to the site, upload to the internet and test
In this course we cover the basic theory of Cascading Style Sheets with respect to a real life example web-site Whitechapel Cottage. We build on the knowledge attained in the first course and convert the same layout to a CSS based layout and build the infrastructure ready to add the content to the site.
Prerequisites
The pre-requisite for the Basic Web Design II course is the completion of Basic Web Design I. This ensures the background knowledge of the class is at the same level and we cover a re-design of the Whitechapel Cottage site so experience with the template on the tables based layout is required for this course.Investment

How to be Found on the Internet
Course Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following:
- Learn about the main objective of having a website primarily for internet marketing
- Learn about the key concepts of Search Engine Optimisation.
- Learn about keywords and key-phrases and their deployment
- Learn about the on-page factors which are related to how a search engine can find your site, title tags, keywords, meta description etc
- Learn about the off-page factors which are about link optimisation and how to build good anchor links and page ranking
- Learn about the search engine monitoring consoles and how they help the ongoing tuning process of the website for better search engine optimisation.
- A basic understanding of the difference between 'organic' search engine optimisation and pay per click campaigns
The course covers the key principles of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and how to set your website up to be found, tuning for keywords, then how to list with the 3 largest Search Engines and establish webmaster consoles for monitoring. Also covered are Google Dashboard, Google Analytics and how to set webmaster consoles in Yahoo and Bing webmaster search engine interfaces.
